Good to Know Before You Travel
Climate and clothing
- Kathmandu is about 1,350 m and often has cooler mornings and evenings than Lumbini and Pokhara. A light warm layer is useful even when daytime conditions are pleasant.
- Lumbini lies in the low Tarai at roughly 150 m. It is usually the hottest and most humid part of this itinerary, especially from March through June and during the monsoon months.
- Pokhara is lower and generally warmer than Kathmandu. It also receives substantial rainfall, so quick-drying clothing and a compact rain layer are valuable. Sarangkot can still be cool and windy before sunrise.
- Weather can change within one day. Dress in light layers that can be removed or added easily rather than relying on one heavy garment.
Pace, access and mobility
- The overall altitude is low and acclimatisation is not normally a concern. Physical demands come instead from long touring days, stairs, uneven stone or brick paving and heat.
- Day 05 and Day 07 are intentionally comprehensive. Both may last 10 hours or more. A slower version can be arranged by reducing the number of sites or adding an extra night.
- Swayambhunath, Changu Narayan, Sarangkot, the World Peace Pagoda and Pumdikot involve slopes or steps. Caves may be wet, dark and uneven.
- Visitors with reduced mobility, breathing difficulty, claustrophobia or balance concerns should notify the company before booking so that access routes and alternatives can be planned.
Sacred-site etiquette
- Wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees at temples and monasteries. A lightweight scarf can be useful, but it does not replace respectful dress where stricter rules apply.
- Remove shoes when requested. Do not touch statues, ritual objects, offerings, manuscripts or painted surfaces.
- Walk clockwise around Buddhist stupas, chortens and mani walls unless the guide explains a different local practice.
- At Pashupatinath, non-Hindus cannot enter the main temple’s inner courtyard. Funeral ceremonies are public but deeply personal; maintain distance and photograph only where permitted.
- A sighting of the Living Goddess Kumari is never guaranteed. Remain quiet at Kumari Ghar and follow all instructions concerning photography.
- Monasteries may close halls during prayer, retreat or private ceremonies. The guide will adapt the visit without interrupting religious practice.
Transport, flights and entry fees
- Domestic flights in Nepal may be delayed or cancelled because of weather, visibility or operational restrictions. Keep essential medicine and valuables in hand baggage.
- Airline baggage allowances vary by carrier and ticket class. The final allowance should be checked on the issued ticket.
- Driving times are approximate. Nepal’s road conditions can change rapidly because of traffic, maintenance, landslides and monsoon rain.
- Entry fees are excluded and may change without notice. Carry Nepalese rupees in smaller denominations, as some ticket counters may not accept cards or foreign currency.
- Opening hours and photography rules can change during festivals, conservation work, state ceremonies or religious events.
Health, safety and responsible travel
- Bring any prescribed medicine in its original packaging and carry a basic personal first-aid supply. Travel insurance should cover medical care and trip interruption.
- Drink treated or sealed water and use sun protection. In hot Lumbini conditions, increase fluid intake and take shaded breaks.
- Mosquito repellent is particularly useful in the Tarai and near lakes. Follow current health advice from a qualified travel clinic before departure.
- Do not feed monkeys or other animals. Keep food secured at Swayambhunath and similar sites.
- Ask permission before photographing people, craftspeople, monks or ceremonies. Supporting locally made products is preferable to buying objects of uncertain cultural or archaeological origin.
